Hey, this is just an idea, but what if we created a Scholastic Grand Prix? That way instead of the qualifiers for the High School Closed Championship being decided after one event, you can get a more fair system. I know for a fact how corrupt the current system is, I lost out on getting into the closed after losing only to Zeb in the second round, and then beating Freerksen, the #2 seed in the tournament, to finish with 4/5. I lost the tiebreaker on a coin flip. How fair is that? I know some people won't agree with me, but I think it would be a good system to implement so that the Scholastic players feel more like adults because we have our own GP, and so that having one bad day (or one bad 50/50 flip) eliminate you from going to the closed. I know if the State Championship Closed was determined this way, there would be a riot!

Hi Jeremy!
I'm not all that in sync with the scholastic system myself and don't know what would need to happen to change the current system, but I bet Don Ronnfeldt and Steve Young would. Drop them a line at dronnfeldt@mchsi.com and steverayy@hotmail.com to pick their brains a little. I'm sure they'd be happy to answer any questions you might have.
Also, this may be something you'd like to bring up at the 2004 Annual Meeting at the Iowa State Closed & Class Championships next month in Iowa City. This kind of thing is exactly what this meeting is for, so I encourage you to attend.
What you could do in the meantime is come up with an idea of some kind of grand prix system yourself and get it ready to propose it to the membership at the Annual Meeting. I can tell you from experience that if you have a proposed *solution*, your words and ideas carry much more weight than if you just to point out a problem you'd like to see fixed.
Great idea though, Jeremy! Keep 'em comin'!
Best Regards,
Matt Nemmers

Hi Jeremy, That's got to be fustrating that you got shut out of the finals even though you only dropped points to the highest rated player in the field. A Grand Prix requires a lot of time and effort on a lot of people's parts (including players and parents). It would be a shame if worthy players weren't able to qualify because of sports or church or girlfriends or ....
A suggestion you may want to consder is to invite all plus scoring high schoolers (or some variant) to play in a 1 day tournament to get to the 6 invites. Sort of like the old interzonals. There were so many 4-1 scores because the field was bottom heavy with under 1000's that the top contenders had to weed through. After all, it was a K-12.
Have you let Roger know how you feel? He may not agree, but i'm sure he'd be interested in your thoughts.

I don't think the solution needs to be that complicated. I think Iowa is starting to see some strong scholastic players. In fact in this year's closed, I think there were only 2 seniors, 1 sophomore and 3 freshman. Obviously, the competition is getting tougher. I will be helping Jeremy come up with a proposal to be presented at the Class Championship in Iowa City.
If you have ideas that you want to include, feel free to add to this message. If you want to help put together a proposal, drop me a note. Tim

Hi this is Femi here, my first post...I took the name Ocelot because there's a character on this game I'm obsessed with named Revolver Ocelot, so please be tolerant. Yeah, that sucks Jeremy- heard you had missed out on the closed because of a tiebreak, but a coin flip?? Crazy. The GP idea is excellent. I think you can use the existing matches and tournaments to create a point system without having to add any more events, which seems to be what Hank was alluding to. Just have each game count a certain number of points for team matches and then the state tournament can be a "super qualifier" with more points. I'm assuming you play matches against other schools on a set schedule during the season. Judging by my experience with H.S chess elsewhere, the top boards should be worth more (you play a match with another school- the first board winner takes 5 points, the second 3, or some system you guys can come up with). Then the state K-12 can be like a "big people" qualifier with points awarded based on place- at the end of this tournament, the 6 H.S kids with the highest point totals (match points + the tournament) go to the closed. Under this system, results are based on performance through the whole year- the strongest players should make it. The only fly in the soup is that if a school has a lot of strong players, only one or two can qualify, but this insures that several schools will be represented. Just a thought...

Aaaahh.....so you're a Metal Gear Solid fan, too, Femi? I'm hooked on the PC version of Medal of Honor: Spearhead. The multiplayer is just straight addicting. Best, Matt

Yes indeed Matt- completely obsessed (I'm also like that with starcraft, super smash brothers (for N64-legendary) and a couple of others). I know you love those Medal of Honor games - were'nt you playing that at the Sanboothe?
I might as well use this to issue my first official challenge: I hereby challenge anybody to a super smash bros one on one battle (Zelda stage with low items, no hammer). I suggest the purse be collected from the IASCA general fund... ;D

I accept your challenge. It has been a long time since I played SSB for 64 (I have the new one for Gamecube!), but I think I would still pose a decent challenge for you.

I agree with Jeremy's idea on Grand Prix points. I don't think this is the place to challenge people to other games .. Use the "General postings" board for that Maybe Matt should add an "Other Games" part to the forum. Anyone up for some MM2,MCM2,MTM2? Only those that play it know what it means I like this idea because I go to nearly every tournament I can, but wouldn't this be an advantage to people like me?
