Hi there everyone, its just me, Jeremy causing some more chaos by pointing things out. What is the deal lately with scholastic tournaments being scheduled on the same days as each other? I just looked today and saw one scheduled in Cedar Rapids the same day as one here in Ankeny that was scheduled much earlier and posted on the iowachess.org site much earlier. In addition, I've noticed that frequently these tournaments are set up in central Iowa and then it almost seems like a retaliatory tournament will be hastily set up in eastern Iowa. Any insight or opinions from anyone?

Hi Jeremy, I'll explain my end of it. I pointed out at the meeting in April that I would be moving the January tournament to December in order to leave January free to have the Denker/Polgar tournaments.
Joe Stull offered to host the Girls championships in Creston and 1/26 was the only day he could get the school. I had told Jodene that this may happen and have helped her to get a TD for the Okoboji Open. I ran the Youth tournament at Okoboji last year. None of the players from that tournament played in any of the other scholastic tournaments and only 1 tournament regular played in the Okoboji tournament.
Jim Hodina and Eric Stumpf are running a series of tournaments at Prairie in Cedar Rapids and it seems that January 19th is the only date they could have it. The next free date would be late February. The tournament on the 19th is an unrated affair and I was asked before they went ahead. This is going to be a good tournament for beginners. I hope I do not lose too many HS players, but am hopeful that my low entry fee and generous prizes will offset any I do lose. I'd like to point out that Jim is a great help to me in the Cedar Rapids tournaments and I have offerred to help him and Eric with the other 2 tmnts in their series.
I had the December 1st tournament iced out and did reschedule it on 12/15, the same day as the quick chess tournament. That was the first available day for the school and if it wasn't done then, it probably would have been canceled.
Now , all these tournaments are in very different parts of the state. It is a true statement that the casual players/parents will not travel from Des Moines to Iowa City or from Iowa City to Ames.... Steve runs a lot of unrated tournaments in Iowa City that no one knows about, but all of these other tournaments are advertised on the web site, run above board and I don't think there is a retaliatory aspect to them.
Having too many tournaments is not a problem. When I first took over scholastics 3 seasons ago, I was the only one running them. Now Jim, Pete, and Soma have all run some tournaments. I am waiting for you to give it a shot!!! Ultimately, it is only going to help. The acid test to me is will these new tournament organizers go the extra mile and get a tournament report on the web site, pictures on chess.com, and an article/crosstable in the EP. It bothers me a lot when we have tournaments like the Siberian Open and State Quick Chess Championship come and go with no mention of prize winners or state champions.

Bridge-playing chess parent here. I already all of the major bridge tournaments and most of the minor tournaments I'll be going to in 2009. Everything is on the bridge website and it is pretty consistent from year to year. (Some are every other year) I think there is some consistency in chess tournaments from year-to-year, but it sounds like the smaller ones are more spontaneous which begs the question - how much publicity will they get?
